What about noise?
What about noise?

Shoosh!

In a world where there are more and more people around us, it is cool to live in an environment where there is less noise possible. And many vacuum cleaner sellers brag their machines to be the most silent on the market. God!

Most residential vacuum cleaner unit has a decibel rate around 68 dB (dB is the symbol for decibels, keep that in mind), and there are many, many comparative charts on all kinds of media. All of that to say that you can lose your mind about vacuum cleaner decibels.

So, how do we do to see clearly? We simply have to know that a normal discussion between two adults makes around 60 dB; your shower and your dishwasher 70 dB; your toilet and your alarm clock make 75 dB. And what about your lovely lawn mower? 90 dB. So, that give some good examples,

but nobody critics this rate. Nobody asks for a less noisy toilet. Have you ever heard a lawn mower seller make a pitch about the noise? Of course, a vacuum cleaner is used inside the house, unlike a lawn mower, and nobody wants to have a disturbing noise in their home. But all this echo about the noise is getting nowhere!

We have to know that it is a marketing strategy behind this noise thing. Because the technique to find the rate of decibels consists of a test made in a 10' room closed. But we lived in a house where we have open space and the dimensions of our room are not necessarily the same as the test. Except for the canister vacuum that we dragged behind us, so we can really hear it (hose are about 6'), the central vacuum is generally installed in the basement or in the garage where you can't hear it. So why keep on selling these devices by insisting on the low noise?

Of course, industrial machines are noisy. It's the essence of this equipment. The more power you need, the more noise you will get. But who needs an industrial vacuum cleaner in his house?

So the big deal is this one: the next times you'll be looking for a brand new vacuum cleaner, let's say a canister one, ask the seller to start the unit and keep on talking with the dealer. If you can't hear you say, the vacuum cleaner is too noisy. A central vacuum? You just don't have to ask yourself about the noise! All central vacuum cleaner systems are equipped with a great muffler to kill the sound! And above all, your device will be installed far away in the basement or in the garage, so the noise is the last thing you should care with a central vacuum cleaner. Unless you live in your garage!
